For Grownups

Who in his or her right mind wants to feel helpless?

Even worse, who wants to feel helpless before a stranger? Not this Webmaster, you can be sure! What happens when you need to find a new family dentist? After all, even with a dentist that we know and trust, it is not exactly empowering to spend time in a dentist's chair. Think what it is like to go to a new dentist and to have to lean back in the chair, feel the chair move into a position that even an Olympic gymnast couldn't escape from and then hear a strange voice ordering, "Open. Open wider."

Mercy!

So, finding a new family dentist is much worse than most things.  That is especially true if you worry for a hobby: "How do I know the kind of person they are?" or, "How do I know  the or the kind of work they do? "

Besides, even if you don't worry for a hobby, you all know the unfortunate stereotypes of dentists:

So, most of us try to put off all the anxiety associated with finding a new dentist as long as we can and then worry anyway.

Why do we worry anyway? Because we know we are just waiting for a sign that we cannot postpone a visit to the dentist any longer. And what is the sign we are waiting for? Pain, of course ("Oh, maybe I'll just get a warning tingling," we fool ourselves.) And pain will make to first trip to the dentist even worse!  It may even be a sign we are on the way to the endodontist for the dreaded ROOT CANAL.   So we all agree that waiting for pain before finding a new dentist is a poor idea.

So, don't be silly (like this Webmaster) and wait. Make an appointment just to get your teeth cleaned and to talk to Dr. Benedict while she counts your teeth on the first visit. You will feel ever so much better and ever so much less helpless on your next appointment  if you have a new dentist you know and like.

By the way, you might have a little one around the house that does not look forward to trips to the dentist. In fact, taking trips to the dentist with that child may be your darker days of parenthood. Check out the For Parents pages for some tips on making it easier.
